    Different dimension of checker bricks will have different thermal property. For example, earlier hot blast furnace regenerator checker bricks are standard size with 40mm holes and 32.7m2 heating area/m3. Current used top burning hot blast furnace checker bricks have 20mm holes and 64m2 heating area /m3. From various tests in China and Russia, in Kalugin top burning hot blast furnaces, 30mm holes and 20mm holes checker bricks will not form slag and won’t be blocked by dust during the whole service life of hot blast furnace. 20mm holes checker bricks can not only increase heating area, but also decrease checker bricks using quantity, can reduce hot blast furnace refractory material using in large scale, so the investment is declined.

    Checker Bricks Heat Storage Mechanism

    Hot blast furnace’s function is heating cold air to hot air and then delivered to blast furnace combustion chamber. The burning period and air delivering period alternatively repeat in hot blast furnace. During the burning period, high-temperature air passes through blast furnace checker bricks’ holes and transfers energy to checker bricks, during air blowing period, cold air from air blower can be heated to hot air by refractory checker bricks and be transferred to hot blast furnace combustion chamber by hot air pipe.

      Checker bricks are mainly used at regenerative chamber of hot blast furnace. Checker bricks with identical structure and holes are orderly arranged, so all the holes of checker bricks are connected to allow air pass smoothly. Based on technical requirement of different temperature zone, silica checker bricks and clay checker bricks are usually adopted. In some hot blast furnaces, high alumina checker bricks, mullite checker bricks and sillimanite bricks are also adopted.
