Steel And Iron Industry Refractory Material Description

Steel and iron making industry consume 60%~70% of produced refractory material, so the development of steel and iron industry is curial to the development of refractory material industry. Refractory material are mainly used as furnace lining for iron and steel smelting. Refractory material plays an important role for steel quality and purity. For example, when producing low carbon steel, ultra low carbon steel and stainless steel, carbon containing refractory material should not be used as furnace lining, or carbon will dissolve into steel liquid and cause the increase of carbon in steel. Refractory materials containing SiO2, Cr2O3 and silicate binders have certain degree of high temperature oxidability, they will supply oxygen to steel liquid under high temperature or vacuum conditions, which can lead to the exceed of oxygen content.

Refractory materials also play a key role for cutting the cost of steel making. It’s not only the benefits brought from unit refractory materials consumption decrease, but also the more important indirect benefits such as longer furnace service life, smooth production and operation . As known for us, the service life of blast furnace, converter, electric arc furnace, refinery furnace, steel ladle and tundish will have fundamental influence for production efficiency, invest and benefits. Meanwhile, the insulating materials used for heat storage of metallurgical vessels also have significant influence on energy consumption.

The development of steel and iron smelting technique can prompt the development of refractory materials. For instance:

  1. BOF top and bottom blowing technique. Top and bottom blowing converter requires long service life air supply system, so magnesia carbon air supply modules are developed.
  2. Near-net-shape continuous casting technique. It requires the thin wall to have extraordinary corrosion resistant sub-entry nozzle and side seal. If these new products can’t be developed or can’t meet using standards, near-net-shape continuous casting technique won’t be developed.
  3. Direct current electric furnace. In a fairly long time, because the bottom electrode material can meet the requirement, direct current electric furnace steel smelting technique is constrained. Until ABB and RHI company cooperatively developed bottom electrode electricity conducting refractory material, direct current electric furnace steel making technique is substantially developed.
  4. Likewise, if sub-entry nozzle is not developed, continuous casting technique will not be invented. In a word, refractory material should follow the step of metallurgical technique and meet the requirement of new smelting crafts and contribute to the development of metal smelting technology.
