Refractory Materials Applied In Iron And Steel Industry

The main raw materials used in blast furnace are iron ore(natural or synthesized), fuel(coke and fuel injection), flux( lime or dolomite). Modern steel making production flow is: iron ore smelt into  pig iron in blast furnace- molten iron poured into converter or electric furnace to make steel-pour liquid steel into continuous casting billet or steel ingot-processed into various steels by rolling or other plastic deformation methods.

Because different furnaces have different working environment and using requirement during steel making, refractory materials needed are different correspondingly. Here are some introduction of refractory materials used in steel making and their performances.

Magnesia Carbon Bricks And Other Materials Used For Converter

High strength magnesia carbon brick are mainly used in impact zone and added with antioxidant. The hot modulus of rupture can reach 16~20Mpa when aluminum powder is added, but thermal expansion coefficient will be larger, slag resistance ability will be lower, easier to spall.

Other refractory materials applied in converter includes: Magnesia Brick, patching material, furnace bottom ramming mass, tap hole patching material, magnesia carbon mortar, magnesia joint sealing material(joint sealant), fire door magnesia ramming mass and so on.

Electric Arc Furnace Refractory Material

Electric arc furnace lip: High alumina castable, mullite castable, corundum castable, chrome corundum castable, etc.

1.    Refractory Material Used In Electric Furnace Wall

Main furnace wall: direct bonded magnesia chrome brick, pre-reaction magnesia chrome brick, magnesia brick.

Slag line: oil immersion magnesia brick, direct bonded magnesia chrome brick, fusion cast magnesia chrome brick, magnesia carbon brick

Hot spot: oil immersed magnesia brick, direct bond magnesia chrome brick, fusion casting magnesia chrome brick, magnesite carbon brick.

  1. Refractory Material Used In Hearth Bottom

Insulation layer: asbestos board(ceramic fiber board), diatomite powder, insulation brick.

Permanent layer: Sintered magnesia brick(MgO95~96%), pitch bonded magnesia brick, etc.

Working lining: Magnesia sand, pitch, tar(brine, water glass), magnesia-calcium-iron sand for tamped bottom. Pitch bonded magnesia brick and brine boned brick for masonry bottom.

  1. Refractory Material Used In Electric Bottom Tapping

Tap hole brick: high strength magnesia carbon brick(C≥20%),alumina  silicon carbide carbon brick( Al2O3-SiC-C brick).

Tap hole ladle filler sand: forsterite-magnesia sand-carbon black, Mg-Ca-Fe sand.

Ladle slag line: magnesia carbon brick, alumina magnesia carbon brick.

Ladle wall, low carbon magnesia carbon brick(5~14C%), Al-Mg-C brick, carbon free brick(alumina magnesia unburned brick, alumina magnesia castable.

Ladle bottom: Al2O3-MgO-C brick, alumina magnesia castable, corundum spinel castable, fusion magnesia spinel castable, pocket brick, porous plug, ladle filler sand.
