Magnesia Forsterite Brick Description

Magnesia forsterite brick takes calcined forsterite or sillimanite and sintered magnesia sand as the main raw material. The ratio of magnesia sand is usually 20%~40%. Magnesia forsterite bricks have better high-temperature performance than forsterite bricks or sillimanite bricks. The purer the raw material is, the better the performance of the bricks will be. Natural magnesia silica bricks, forsterite bricks, and magnesia forsterite brick has a large amount of impurity and are not suitable for high-temperature applications. Especially when developing chrome-free alkaline bricks for glass kiln regenerative chambers, high-purity magnesia forsterite bricks have significant advantages. High-purity magnesia forsterite bricks adopt pre-synthesized magnesia forsterite sand as raw material. High-purity magnesia forsterite bricks feature high content of MgO and SiO2, low impurity, good corrosion resistance, excellent high-temperature performance, and so on. Magnesia forsterite bricks are mainly used in glass kiln regenerative chambers, steel ladles, and so on.

Main Mineral Composition of Forsterite Brick

Forsterite brick is used as a weakly alkaline refractory material. Containing 35% to 55% of magnesium oxide and a considerable amount of magnesium ferrite. The MgO/SiO2 molar ratio is 0.94~1.33. Forsterite 2MgO·SiO2 (abbreviated as M2Si) is the main crystal phase. It has a certain ability to resist alkaline slag, high refractoriness, load softening temperature, and strong anti-oxidation iron corrosion ability. Use peridotite, serpentine, pure peridotite, talc, etc. as raw materials, add an appropriate amount of sintered magnesia, and fire in an oxidizing atmosphere. The sintering temperature increases correspondingly with the increase in the amount of magnesia added. It can be used for the inner lining of non-ferrous metal smelting furnaces, steelmaking open hearth furnace regenerators and cement rotary kilns, etc.

Olivine is the main mineral raw material for making forsterite bricks. According to the different components of pyroxene, peridotite can be divided into obsidian peridotite, different exfoliation peridotite, two pyroxene peridotite, and so on. The olivine content in peridotite is generally more than 40% to 50%, and the accessory minerals include hornblende, biotite, chromite, and so on. When the olivine content exceeds 90%, it is called pure peridotite.

Due to the moderate price of forsterite bricks, low thermal conductivity (1/3~1/4 of high-purity magnesia bricks), no hydration, good chemical and mineralogical stability, and resistance to metal melt and slag erosion. And it has good compatibility with most refractory materials and has been valued by people. In the iron and steel industry, forsterite bricks are used for tap hole plugging materials, tap troughs, mixed iron cars, and steel drum linings. Due to its good creep resistance and corrosion resistance, it can be used as a regenerator checker brick for a glass furnace.

      Magnesia Forsterite Bricks Applications

Industrial magnesia forsterite bricks are usually high-purity magnesia forsterite bricks, which adopt pre-synthesized magnesia forsterite sand as raw material. High-purity magnesia forsterite brick feature high content of MgO and SiO2, low impurity, good corrosion resistance, excellent high-temperature performance, etc. Magnesia forsterite brick belongs to alkaline refractory bricks and can resist basic slag corrosion. Magnesia forsterite brick is mainly used as the inner lining of nonferrous metal smelting furnaces, steel-making open hearth furnaces regenerative chambers, glass kiln regenerative chambers, steel ladles, and so on. Magnesia forsterite is also used as a rotary furnace large area patching material, tundish dry vibration material, tundish slag stopping wall, etc.

        Synthetic Forsterite Bricks

Synthetic forsterite brick is a green and environment-friendly product. Instead of magnesia-chrome bricks for glass kilns, this product has been successfully used in glass kilns at home and abroad for many years. Synthetic forsterite brick is a neutral refractory material with sintered olivine, serpentine, and periclase as the main crystal phase. It has high resistance to alkaline slag leaching.

        Advantages of Forsterite Bricks

Forsterite bricks, also known as magnesia-silicate bricks, are magnesia-silicon composite refractory materials made of fired magnesia-silicate sand and natural peridotite. The main crystal phase is forsterite (2MgO·SiO2). Forsterite bricks have higher refractoriness and softer temperature, a stronger ability to resist molten iron oxide, and better thermal shock stability than ordinary magnesia bricks. Compared with magnesia bricks, what are the advantages of forsterite zirconium bricks?

        • (1) Enhanced corrosion resistance. On the top of the regenerative kiln and the lattice body on the vault of the chamber wall, the damage of the refractory material is mainly due to the erosion of SO2 in the batching soot and V2O vapor in the heavy oil fuel.
        • (2) The density increases and the apparent pores decrease. When the vulcanization temperature is 1550°C, when there are CaO, FeO3, and A2O impurities in the vulcanization product, the resulting liquid phase temperature is relatively low. The liquid phase generated by the matrix part promotes the sintering of the product and increases the volume density of the product.
        • (3) Improve thermal shock resistance. The higher ZO content in the product structure improves the thermal shock resistance of the product. Under the same thermal shock conditions, the magnesia-zirconium brick is 2~4 times, while the magnesia brick is only once.
        • (4) High-temperature strength increases. The high-temperature flexural strength of magnesia-zirconium bricks and recombined magnesia bricks, 1400 ℃ for half an hour, is 2 to 3 times higher than that of the latter.

Forsterite zircon bricks are mainly used in the upper and middle parts of the regenerator of the glass kiln. Its service life is much higher than that of magnesia bricks, and its service life can reach more than 6 years in the kiln for making soda-lime glass.
